Book Review: Tempest Rising by Tracy Deebs

Published Date: May 10, 2011

Buy: Amazon, B&N

Goodread Blurbs: Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kona, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her-and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.

When I started this book I didn't know if I would like it.  I've never read about mermaids before, so this was something new.  I'm glad I kept reading.  I couldn't put it down.

Tempest has to choose to give in to her mermaid side or stay on land with her father and brothers.  It may be harder to stay away from the ocean when some of the changes begin to occur early.  Tempest is a confused teenager.  She's being forced to make a decision she never wanted to make.  She doesn't want to give up her human life with her family or friends.  She's constantly struggling with her feelings toward the ocean life that's calling her.  I do love that she's snarky and doesn't take crap from anyone.  She does her best to handle things on her own.

There wasn't a ton of input from the other characters.  Well except for Kona & Mark.  (Yes there is a love triangle of sorts.) I fell in love with Tempest's brother, Moku.  He's such a sweet and innocent soul.  I couldn't help but smile anytime he was in a scene.

There are a few action packed scenes, but most of what took place was self discovery.  This girl has had to overcome so many things in just a few short days, and some things she thought were true prove to be otherwise.  There were parts that were so incredibly heart wrenching.  While there is a ton of sarcastic humor, there is still a lot of emotion.

I'm looking forward to reading Tempest Unleashed.

Desperately Wanting Wednesday (7)

Desperatly Wanting Wednesday, hosted by Parajunkee's View

There are two books that I can't wait to get my hands on.

I have less than a month to get this. I can't wait to see what's going to happen next in Kaylee's life.  It's already been pre-ordered.  June 26th needs to hurry and get here.

I'm hoping this book of short stories will hold me over until Ever After hits the shelves.  I can't wait to see how things go from Trent's perspective!

Book Review: Immortal Hearts by Ellen Schreiber

Publish Date: May 15, 2012

Buy: Amazon, B&N

Source: Bought

Goodreads Blurb: Athena "Stormy" Sterling is coming to Dullsville, and Raven is both excited and panicked in anticipation of Alexander's little sister's visit. Alexander tells Raven that she and his sister have a lot in common, but can the mini-Raven be everything she hopes for? Alexander calls her Stormy for a reason.

Stormy's visit stirs up the perfect immortal whirlwind. Raven is forced to take a good look at what it would really mean to be a vampire in the Sterling family, aside from some of the things she already loves, like shunning the sun and sleeping in a coffin with Alexander. When Raven compares her life with Stormy's, she can see that it's not all starry skies and black roses. But Raven knows she's always wanted to be a vampire.

Alexander is as romantic and dreamy as ever, and though he keeps showing Raven how much he loves her, will she ultimately be able to convince him that it's the right thing to turn her?

This final chapter of Vampire Kisses' nocturnal romance will keep all mortal and immortal hearts racing.

Immortal Hearts is the last book in the Vampire Kisses series.  It's kind of bittersweet seeing this series come to an end.

Raven is excited and nervous to meet Alexander's sister, Stormy.  It doesn't help that she's constantly worried about the Maxwell's scheming.  It seems like no matter what they always have to cause trouble with Raven and Alexander.

This book mostly revolved around the relationship Raven builds with Stormy.  Stormy is spunky and outspoken.  She's not afraid to say what's on her mind.  She's actually pretty much a little Raven.  Raven kind of got on my nerves in this book.  I've always loved her character and attitude, but she lost her sense of self.  She was too worried about what other people thought of her.  She's never been like that in any other book in this series.

Overall, it was a light and fun read.  A great way to end the series.

Goodreads Blurb: Lately strange things have been happening to Daire Santos. Animals follow her, crows mock her, and glowing people appear out of nowhere. Worried that Daire is having a nervous breakdown, her mother packs her off to stay in the dusty plains of Enchantment, New Mexico with a grandmother she’s never met.

There she crosses paths with Dace, a gorgeous guy with unearthly blue eyes who she’s encountered before...but only in her dreams. And she’ll get to know her grandmother—a woman who recognizes Daire’s bizarre episodes for what they are. A call to her true destiny as a Soul Seeker, one who can navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead. Her grandmother immediately begins teaching her to harness her powers—but it’s an art that must be mastered quickly. Because Dace’s brother is an evil shape-shifter who’s out to steal her powers. Now Daire must embrace her fate as a Soul Seeker and find out if Dace is one guy she’s meant to be with...or if he’s allied with the enemy she’s destined to destroy

I was really hoping this book would draw me in.  I loved her Immortals series, but this one just didn't have that kind of pull for me.  I did love the idea behind this book though.

I liked how the characters had Hispanic and Native American origins.  These cultures have many things to offer.  Magick and spirit animals were extremely important in the building of this story.  Your spirit animal guides you through your choices and life's journey.  I have often wondered what animal I would be most like, but I still haven't figured that one out.  I wasn't exactly sure how the magick fit in besides the fact that all seekers posses it.  There wasn't much of an explanation in what Daire could do, just that she was extremely powerful.  Noel does offer a few scenes with minor things Daire can do.

There wasn't much background on any of the characters except Daire, the MC.  The base knowledge of Dace and Cade was given, but nothing more.  I would have loved to know a bit more about Dace.  He is the main focus in her dreams, and it would have been nice to see other parts of him.

Even though I felt there was a lot of buildup and not enough events, I will read the next book in the series (due out this fall).  I'm intrigued with where the story will take us, and if her dream is a prophecy or just her fears.

Book Review: Die For Me by Amy Plum (Audio book)

Publish Date: May 10, 2011

Buy: Amazon, B&N, Audible

Source: Bought from Audible

Goodreads Blurb: My life had always been blissfully, wonderfully normal. But it only took one moment to change everything.

Suddenly, my sister, Georgia, and I were orphans. We put our lives into storage and moved to Paris to live with my grandparents. And I knew my shattered heart, my shattered life, would never feel normal again. Then I met Vincent.

Mysterious, sexy, and unnervingly charming, Vincent Delacroix appeared out of nowhere and swept me off my feet. Just like that, I was in danger of losing my heart all over again. But I was ready to let it happen.

Of course, nothing is ever that easy. Because Vincent is no normal human. He has a terrifying destiny, one that puts his life at risk every day. He also has enemies . . . immortal, murderous enemies who are determined to destroy him and all of his kind.

While I'm fighting to piece together the remnants of my life, can I risk putting my heart—as well as my life and my family's—in jeopardy for a chance at love?

This is going to be a quickie.   I absolutely loved this book.  It's a sweet romance that takes place in Paris.  I've always wanted to go there, and the description that Plum gives makes me want to that much more!

The narrator did a fabulous job of creating the world in which Katie and Vincent live.  I'd would be so focused on their story that when I got to work I didn't want to go inside and leave the story.  It was extremely difficult to hit the stop button.

The characters are great, and easy to relate to.  Many of us have felt a loss in our family, although it may not have been as close to home as Katie losing her parents.  Each of the people in this book have suffered some kind of loss.  But those experiences helped them grow stronger.  For me, Jewels and Ambrose are the favorite characters.  They're handsome, confident and know how to kick butt when needed.  Vincent is such a sweet person, and you can't help but love his romantic ways.

Die For Me is such a unique story.  I really enjoyed how Amy Plum took being immortal to a completely different level.
