Dirty Little Secret #3

This is a weekly meme hosted by Under the Covers.

What book has been sitting in your TBR pile the longest and why haven't you picked it up yet? Or more importantly, will you ever read it now that its been sitting there for forever?

When I started my Goodreads account I was reading the Blue Bloods series by Melissa De La Cruz.  SO the oldest book on my TBR is Keys to the Repository. For whatever reasonI never picked it up. I think it was because there were too many other books calling for my attention.  Well I will finally be reading this, probably within the next week. I found it at Half Price Books and decided to get it since I needed it to complete my collection.

So what's your dirty little secret???

Desperately Wanting Wednesday #4: Books into Movies

</span><span class=

This is a meme hosted by Parajunkee View for books we can't wait to get our hands one.  New releases as well as ones already published.

This week is books that need to be read before made into a movie this year.

I read this when I was in high school, and have watched the movie that starred Mia Farrow.  So I'm anxious to see the new one coming out in December, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  So this will be a re-read. One I've been meaning to read again for a while.

This will also be a re-read.  It's been much long since I've read it though. I was either in Junior High or elementary.  I don't remember. I'm really excited to see this movie.  The honey likes The Lord of the Rings, so it'll be great to go see this since we both like the LOTR.

It's got vampires so I'm game.  :P  I'm actually about to start listening to this audiobook.  I'll let y'all know how it goes. :D

Book Review: Halflings by Heather Burch

Author: Heather Burch

Publisher: Zondervan Publishing

Release Date: January 31, 2012

Buy: Amazon, B&N

Goodreads Blurb: After being inexplicably targeted by an evil intent on harming her at any cost, seventeen-year-old Nikki finds herself under the watchful guardianship of three mysterious young men who call themselves halflings. Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with.

A growing attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. While she risks a broken heart, Mace and Raven could lose everything, including their souls. As the mysteries behind the boys’ powers, as well as her role in a scientist’s dark plan, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that will affect the future of an entire race of heavenly beings, as well as the precarious equilibrium of the earthly world.

My thoughts:
Nikki finds herself thrown in the battle between Heaven & Hell.  She has three guardian half-angels sworn to protect her.  Tow of the halflings have begun to fall for Nikki.  The choices they make could have them condemned to eternal damnation.

This novel has the same premise as most angel novels.  The main difference is this one throws in science.

Nikki is the lead character.  It was hard to connect with her.  She is supposed to be a level-headed girl that also happens to be awesome in karate and riding motorcycles.  She had moments where she couldn't cope with her choices or things that were taking place, and at times was very whiney.

Mace and Raven were great characters.  Mace is kindhearted and always follows the rules, until he meets Nikki.  He constantly struggles with doing what he is supposed to do and following his heart.  Raven is a brooding halfling.  He hates the world he has to be a part of and all the unfairness of his situation.  He's sliding further and further to the side of evil.  The only person that seems likely to keep him from going down that path is Nikki.  There are so many layers to him, but Nikki manages to break through his shell and see him.

The writing is easy to follow, although sometimes I felt like I was reading a script.

I did enjoy this book, and will read the sequel Guardians that comes out later this year.  This novel definitely produced more question than answers, and I need answers. :)

Q: What is the longest book you’ve read? What are your favorite 600+ page reads?

The longest book I've read has got to be the first two books in A Song of Ice & Fire.  I saw that the show was going to start on HBO last year, and thought it looked like a great read.  So far those are the only two I read.  I need to pick up the third one soon.

My favorite 600+ reads would have to be the last books in the Harry Potter series.  Yes I'm one of those people. I was so sad to see the story end, but loved the journey these books took me on.

So what's the longest book you've read, and what are your favorite long reads?

Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!

My friend and I went to the drive-in for the midnight showing.  I absolutely loved it.  They kept pretty close to the book with a few minor changes.  Those didn't bother me as they didn't detract from the story line.  When reading I wasn't really a fan of Peeta, but after seeing the movie I like him a lot more.

I definitely recommend seeing this movie.

Great Urban Fantasy Series (+18)

Kim Harrison has created such an awesome world with The Hollows series.  It's a place where humans and the supernatural live among each other openly.

The main characters in this series are Rachel, a witch; Ivy, a living vampire; and Jenks, a pixie.  Rachel has to find the strength to overcome the obstacles of quitting Inderland Security and the numerous death threats she receives.  Throughout all of this she has some very saucy and eye opening relationships.

My favorite characters are Jenks, Trent, and Kisten.  Jenks has to be the best pixie ever.  Everything he thinks he says, and he's got a foul mouth for a person that is four inches tall.  Kisten is a hot living vampire.  He just oozes sex when you see him.  Trent is in a universe all his own.  He is mysterious and you never know what he is up to.  Whenever Rachel gets herself into trouble you can be sure Trent is in the mix.

This series will not let you down.  It's packed with action, some romance, and a generous amount of witty humor and smart a$$ comments.  The book titles also mimic Clint Eastwood movies which only adds to the awesomeness.

So what are you waiting for?  Go grab Dead Witch Walking the first book in the Hollows series.  Today is the last day the ebook is available for $.99 on Amazon & B&N.  I promise you won't be disappointed.

Book Review: Matched by Ally Condie

Goodreads Blurb:  Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate... until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

Cassia is beyond excited to attend her Matching Banquet.  After receiving the data card with her Match's information, she decides to look at it.  The face she sees is that of her best friend, Xander.  There's a power surge and the screen goes blank.  When it comes back up, it not Xander she sees, but another boy Ky Markham.  Who is Cassia's Match supposed to be, and which will she choose?

For some reason it took me ages to finally pick this book up.  I was obviously an idiot for waiting so long.  I LOVED this book!!!  I could not imagine living in a world where I was told what to wear, eat, who to be with, and when I died.  Cassia blindly follows the words of the Society for a while, then she begins to wonder and question things.  She has the strength to follow her heart and proves to the Officials that she will not break.

I love Ky.  I think I've found yet another book boyfriend.  He has seen so much pain and destruction but manages to keep his head high and not let the Officials get to him.

What I loved about this book is there was no love at first sight.  When Cassia saw Xander's face she acknowledged that she loved him.  But there was a past relationship between them that it was based on.  She didn't just all of a sudden fall head over heels for him.  Even with Ky the relationship is slow paced.  She seeks him out because of curiosity.  Then they work through different emotions.

This was a great read, and I don't know why I didn't read it sooner.

Musings: Genres

Most readers like to stick to one genre.  I'm guilty of this also.  I know what I like, and I stick to it.  I used to read a lot of murder/mystery novels, but the plots started looking the same and I got bored.

Not long after that my cousin decided to drag me to see Twilight.  So, I decided to read the series.  That was the first YA series I read.  And I was HOOKED.  While not everything I read is YA, most tend to stay in the paranormal/urban fantasy category.  Every once in a while I'll pick up a contemporary novel just to give myself a breather from vampires, werewolves, fairies and angels.  But I still go back fairly quick.  Like I said, I know what I like.

So, do you read only one genre or do you read from many? What are some of your faves?

Not a Book trailer. :P

Due to all the Johnny Depp love I decided I'd put up the trailer to his new movie Dark Shadows directed by Tim Burton.  I love when they work together.  It comes out May 11, 2012!!!  I can't wait.

Q: What is the best book you’ve read in the last month? What is the worst book you’ve read in the last month?

The best book I've read is Starters by Lissa Price. I absolutely loved it and tell everyone about it.

There hasn't been a worst book, just a couple that don't leave me all fluttery inside after reading them.
