The Forest of Hands & Teeth by Carrie Ryan

In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

In a world unseen by mortals, the forces of Summer and Winter are at war. Two Faery Courts have been seeking the Summer Queen for more than nine centuries--one to restore the power of Summer and the other to banish it in this gritty modern Faery tale.

Partials by Dan Wells

Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with partials--engineered organic beings identical to humans--has decimated the world’s population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. The threat of the partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to the disease in over a decade. Humanity’s time is running out.

When sixteen-year-old Kira learns of her best friend’s pregnancy, she’s determined to find a solution. Then one rash decision forces Kira to flee her community with the unlikeliest of allies. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that the survival of both humans and partials rests in her attempts to answer questions of the war’s origin that she never knew to ask.

Combining the fast-paced action of The Hunger Games with the provocative themes of Battlestar Galactica, Partials is a pulse-pounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question--one where our sense of humanity is both our greatest liability, and our only hope for survival.

Book Review: Bloodrose by Andrea Cremer

Amazon Blurb: Calla has always welcomed war. But now that the final battle is upon her, there's more at stake than fighting. There's saving Ren, even if it incurs Shay's wrath. There's keeping Ansel safe, even if he's been branded a traitor. There's proving herself as the pack's alpha, facing unnamable horrors, and ridding the world of the Keepers' magic once and for all. And then there's deciding what to do when the war ends. If Calla makes it out alive, that is. In this remarkable final installment of the Nightshade trilogy, international bestselling author Andrea Cremer crafts a dynamic novel with twists and turns that will keep you breathless until its final pages.

=========================================================

Calla digs herself a hole when she decides she’s going to try to rescue Ren.  She knows she will tick Shay off but tries anyway.  Shay is learning what he has to do as Scion.  He’s also trying to prove to Calla that he is capable of being her alpha mate.  The wolf pack and Searchers overcome the obstacles thrown in front of them.  Shay and Calla finally get all the information on what the Scion must do.  Will Calla and Shay be able to stay together?  Or will Cally lose Shay forever?

This final book in the Nightshade trilogy had me laughing at moments, but also had me in tears.  Some great people leave us.  There are also choices and sacrifices to be made by others. I’m happy to have read this series. I like that it mixed witches with wolves.

Sabine became my favorite in this book.  She may be snarky, but she is loyal and will do what needs to be done without question.

I think the ending was great.  There was a sense of peace to all those involved.

Book Review: Treachery by Andrea Cremer

Goodreads Blurb: From Andrea Cremer’s internationally best-selling Nightshade series, Calla Tor’s brother Ansel tells his side of the betrayal and treachery depicted in Wolfsbane.Ansel’s world is falling apart. The Nightshade pack led by his parents has been violently destroyed. His sister, Calla, abandoned her little brother, leaving him to answer for her crimes. And the Haldis pack that would have been his future is irreparably broken by Calla's betrayal. Suffering at the hands of the Keepers, Ansel is losing everything he's ever loved. The only chance he has to save himself means an alliance with his tormentors, and repaying Calla in full for her treachery. In this novella, find out why Ansel makes the decisions he does in Andrea Cremer's New York Times bestselling novel, Wolfsbane.

===================================================

This novella is written from Ansel’s perspective while he is held prisoner.

I was shocked by how much hatred he had for his sister.  I now understand why he wouldn’t get near her when they were reunited.  He was tortured mentally and physically.  He went through hell while in that cell.  My stomach churned with the things Ren was telling him during his moment of weakness.  The whole time I was thinking, “how could you.”

This story isn’t completely necessary to tell in order to understand Ansel.  It does give an account of what actually happened to him while held captive.  You never really know until this novella.

3/5 stars

Musings: Music while you read????

Anyone that knows me know how much I love music.  It's probably the only thing that could rival my love of books.  I'm not sure what I would do if I had to go a day without hearing one of my favorite tunes.

When I'm with my kids I listen to upbeat songs since they love to dance.  When I readI tend to go with darker more dramatic music.  Alternative music is what helps put me in the mood to delve into the worlds my books create.  Some of my go-to bands are Muse, Band of Skulls, Black Keys, Lykke Li, Naked and Famous, and Joy Formidable.  There are many others; those are just the ones I can name off the top of my head.

I love when authors post their playlists for the books they've written.  I like seeing what the author was listening to that helped them shape the scenes and moods of the characters.  I think it adds so much more to the stories they are telling

So my question is:  Do you listen to music while reading?  If so, what's on your playlist?

Book Review: Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer

Goodreads Blurb: When Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemies, she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer, one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack and the man she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive

====================================================

Calla wakes up groggy in the care of the Searchers. Her first instinct is to attack, but they want her help.  Her main concern is the whereabouts of Shay.  When Calla reunites with Shay she finds out she has been gone from Vail for a week.  She puts some trust in the Searchers when they tell her they plan to help rescue her pack.

This novel was nonstop action.  Even though Ren isn’t near her, Calla still struggles to sort out her feelings about him.  She feels like she’s betraying Ren by getting closer to Shay.

There are few new characters in this book.  Anika is the leader of the Searchers.  She’s stern, but respectful.  Monroe is the leader of the Haldis team.  He’s level headed and unusually comfortable with the Shay and Calla as wolves.  Adne is a young girl with a lot of attitude.  Calla has a hard time discerning whether she is threat to her relationship with Shay.  She can be extremely bratty at times.  I think Conner is my favorite. He’s witty, and constantly using humor to lighten the mood.  I couldn’t help but smirk at his dirty humor.  He’d fit perfectly with my circle of friends.  It was great feeling like I could connect with a character on that level.

This sequel has more action than Nightshade, but it’s still just as good.  Who knew the Searchers were actually pretty decent?

Book Review: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

Goodreads blurb: Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything- including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calla has always followed orders from her masters, the Keepers, without question.  She is to marry Ren, the alpha of the Bane pack, on Halloween in order to create a new pack of wolves.

Calla saves a boy named Shay from a bear during one of her patrols.  By doing that, she has opened up a world of questions.  She begins to wonder what the Keepers’ interest is in Shay, and if everything they have told them is the true.  Calla must choose to stay on the path the Keepers have laid before her, or follow her heart and defy the only truths she has ever known.

This book was very good.  Calla has to learn to trust her gut feeling or follow blind.  The love triangle is a bit different.  It wasn’t really good boy vs bad boy as is the case in most novels in this genre.  Ren is most definitely a bad boy, which is established by his reputation.  Shay is a mystery of sorts.  You never really know the full background on him until the last quarter of the book.  I love the banter between Calla, Shay, and Ren.

You can feel a connection with most of the characters in this novel.  Naomi, Calla’s mother, is overbearing and can be annoying.  Ansel is a funny kid.  He has a positive outlook on life no matter what the situation.  I wish we could have heard about Sabine a bit more.  She has a difficult life that I wanted to see more of in order to understand her better.  Bryn, Calla’s BFF and second in command, has Calla’s back no matter what and without question.  You will love, and may very well strongly dislike/hate, some of the characters.

I was confused in the beginning as to the purpose of the wolves (Guardians), and their relationship to the Keepers.  Everything starts to make sense through the progression of the story.  I really appreciated the mystery instead of being told a majority of the plot in the first half of the novel.  It kept me intrigued.  If you want a wolf story with a little bit of a twist I highly recommend this book.

Musings: Blog Inspiration

I have to admit, I'm a pretty lazy blogger.  I try to blog once a day, or at least every few days.  Life happens, and I can't promise to have something every single day.  But I will do my best.  I started this blog because I love reading books, and wanted to share my thoughts one what I read.

I wouldn't have started this blog if not for the inspiration of Rachel at fiktshun and Misty at KindleObsessed.  They review books on how they feel they should be, and not based on how others are reviewing them.  Both Rachel and Misty have a blogging style unique to them.  I enjoy reading their posts and thoughts on whatever topic they throw out there. :)  I hope to have a following like them one day, and think they do an amazing job referring books.

If I would have never read their blogs, I wouldn't have gotten the kick in the butt to start my own.  Thank you Rachel & Misty for the inspiration.

Book Review: Stargazer by Claudia Gray

Goodreads blurb: The vampire in me was closer to the surface...

Evernight Academy: an exclusive boarding school for the most beautiful, dangerous students of all—vampires. Bianca, born to two vampires, has always been told her destiny is to become one of them.

But Bianca fell in love with Lucas—a vampire hunter sworn to destroy her kind. They were torn apart when his true identity was revealed, forcing him to flee the school.

Although they may be separated, Bianca and Lucas will not give each other up. She will risk anything for the chance to see him again, even if it means coming face-to-face with the vampire hunters of Black Cross—or deceiving the powerful vampires of Evernight. Bianca's secrets will force her to live a life of lies.

Yet Bianca isn't the only one keeping secrets. When Evernight is attacked by an evil force that seems to target her, she discovers the truth she thought she knew is only the beginning....

====================================================

This is the second book in the Evernight series.  I’m still on the fence about whether I will finish this series.  I most likely will because it bugs me to leave a series unfinished.  There were parts that I love about this book, and parts that I couldn’t stand.

Bianca starts seeing strange things at Evernight Academy at night.  At first she thinks it’s a coincidence, but learns that these attacks seem to be focused around her.

Bianca is keeping secrets regarding Lucas, and the school and her family are keeping other secrets.  Who will be the first one to spill???

I do like the characters, and the fact that Bianca is so gung-ho on finding a way to be with Lucas, her true love.  Secretly though, I wish Bianca would date Balthazar.  I mean, he’s sweet and truly cares about her wellbeing.  He is also competent, and very well respected.  He shows her how much he cares for her throughout this book, and it seems like it’s never going to pay off for him.  My heart breaks for him.

Like I said earlier, I will probably finish this series.  It might not be something you like, but it is pretty intriguing.

Book Review: Havoc by Jeff Sampson

Goodreads Blurb: Emily Webb thought life would return to normal after the death of the man who attacked her and her fellow “Deviants.” Or as normal as it could be, after discovering that she has nighttime superpowers . . . and she’s a werewolf. But when Emily awakes one night to find an otherworldy Shadowman watching her, she knows the danger has only just begun.

So Emily and her pack-mates set out to find the people who made them what they are, and why. But as they get closer to the truth, they realize they aren’t the only ones in town with special powers: The most popular girls in school might just have a secret of their own–and they might just have it out for Emily.

With shadowy beings stalking them, a mysterious company doing all it can to keep the truth hidden, and the secrecy of her new identity in jeopardy, life threatens to spiral out of control for Emily. Soon these dangers will come together in one terrifying confrontation that may force her to make the toughest choice of her life . . . so far.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I liked this book a lot.  It picks up where we left off in Vesper.  The only difference is the story is being told between reports about surveillance tapes at Vesper Inc.  Emily is finally coming to grips with her new powers while also trying to figure out her relationship with Spencer.  Dalton is back at school now from being almost killed by Dr. Gunther Elliott.  They have a small pack now.  But there is another female wolf that they are searching for.  During their search for the missing pack member they also try to figure out why they were tampered with.  Each of the personalities while their “Nightiime” selves is completely different from their usual behavior.  But it seems as though the Nighttime versions of themselves pick up on the emotions they try to hide and keep locked away.  Emily has to make some  very difficult decisions for her pack and situations concerning her best friend Megan.  (Whom I still don't’ really like, for the record.)  This novel answers a few questions that were asked in Vesper, but it leaves you with even more questions that you want to be answered now.

Book Review: Anew by Chelsea Fine

Goodreads blurb: Two years ago, Scarlet awoke in the forest alone, afraid, and unable to remember anything. Lost and confused, her life was a mystery...until she met a boy with a familiar voice.

Gabriel Archer has a voice from her past, and Scarlet's determined to remember why. She immerses herself in his life only to discover he has a brother he's kept hidden from her: Tristan Archer.

Upon meeting Tristan, Scarlet's world becomes even more muddled. While she's instinctively drawn to Gabriel, she's impossibly drawn to Tristan--and confused out of her mind. As she tries to piece together her history Scarlet realizes her past...might just be the death of her.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m beginning to think Chelsea Fine is becoming one of my favorite authors.  She never fails to make you connect with her characters.  You also know most of what’s going on in her characters’ minds since she writes from all of the main characters’ points of view.

This novel is about a girl named Scarlet.  She wakes up in the middle of the woods, alone.  She can’t remember anything except her name and that she’s 15.

Two years later she is attending the Annual Kissing Festival with her BFF, Heather.  When she was put in Laura’s care Heather was the only one that didn’t see her as a freak, and openly accepted her.  She is approached by Gabriel, who has a voice she recognizes. But she doesn’t remember from where.  She becomes a part of his life, and finds out he has a brother named Tristan.

Anytime she is near Tristan her heat beats faster and harder.  She tries to figure out why, and learns a few things about herself from the Archer brothers.

I cannot recommend this book enough.  I loved it, and it had me enthralled from the very first page.  You see how things unfold from the viewpoints of Scarlet, Gabriel and Tristan.  It’s also very refreshing.  There are no vampires, werewolves, or anything of that sort.  It was nice to have something to read that didn’t contain mythical creatures.  But there are other mythical entities in this novel.  If you don't’ have it yet, I highly suggest you get it!  I cannot wait for the sequel Awry coming out this summer!!!!

Happy Reading!

Book Review: Vesper by Jeff Sampson

Goodreads Blurb: Emily Webb is a geek. And she’s happy that way. Content hiding under hoodies and curling up to watch old horror flicks, she’s never been the kind of girl who sneaks out for midnight parties. And she’s definitely not the kind of girl who starts fights or flirts with other girls’ boyfriends. Until one night Emily finds herself doing exactly that . . . the same night one of her classmates—also named Emily—is found mysteriously murdered.
The thing is, Emily doesn’t know why she’s doing any of this. By day, she’s the same old boring Emily, but by night, she turns into a thrill seeker. With every nightfall, Emily gets wilder until it’s no longer just her personality that changes. Her body can do things it never could before: Emily is now strong, fast, and utterly fearless. And soon Emily realizes that she’s not just coming out of her shell . . . there’s something much bigger going on. Is she bewitched by the soul of the other, murdered Emily? Or is Emily Webb becoming something else entirely— something not human?
As Emily hunts for answers, she finds out that she’s not the only one this is happening to—some of her classmates are changing as well. Who is turning these teens into monsters—and how many people will they kill to get what they want?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really enjoyed this book.  I think the storyline was a nice change to the books out now that all have the same plot.  Emily is a super geeky and reserved teenage girl.  She doesn’t try to hang out or befriend anybody because of her best friend Megan.  I wasn’t fond of Megan’s character.  She’s incredibly bitchy when it comes to being friends with the “popular” people because of an experience she had years before.  She seriously needs to get over herself.  Anyways….. Emily has transformations into “Nighttime” Emily.   I like this version of Emily. She has confidence, and is charismatic.  She’s also extremely sarcastic which just makes her even more awesome.  She’s the kind of girl I could see myself being friends with.  This entire novel is told past tense, as Emily is telling her story to an investigator at Vesper Inc.  You walk away from this book having more questions than answers, and I love the mystery that’s left to be unraveled.

Book Review: Panty Raid @ Zombie HIgh by Rusty Fischer

Amazon Blurb: Toby’s best friend, and unrequited love, Molly Harper has gone missing. Molly’s boyfriend, “Spud,” thinks he knows where she’s been taken: the mysterious Zombie High, where Spud’s father just happens to be in charge of the top-secret medical facility famous for its work rehabilitating teenage zombies.

Armed with blueprints, passwords, keys and codes, Spud and Toby are ready to make an all-out assault on Zombie High and rescue their fair Molly. There’s just one problem: Toby and Spud are the biggest wimps at Cypress Cove High and need some muscle along for the ride in case any of the zombies get loose.

That’s where Boner and Zack come in. Two of the football team’s biggest players, the jocks are easily conned into joining Spud and Toby on their fictional “panty raid” the minute Spud calls them “chicken” for not accepting his challenge to spend the night at Zombie High.

When Zack and Boner show up to accept the challenge, however, they don’t come alone; they bring their two girlfriends, Lilac and Haley, along for the ride. With events spiraling out of control and zombies lurking around every corner, will Toby and Spud even survive their night at Zombie High, let alone rescue Molly?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This book is a decent read.  I was hoping it was going to be a lot like Zombies Don't Cry, but it wasn’t.  The story line was very interesting, and there was great back story on the characters.  The main character got on my nerves though.  He is your typical teenage boy.  The thing I found annoying was his constant inner commentary about female anatomy.  Although I’ve been told that all boys that age think like this.  So I don’t completely hold this against Toby.  Molly is a very strong character when she finally reappears in this story.  I really connected with her. This novel has a very “mad scientist” feel, but it’s a good read if you need something quick.

SSRC: My Soul to Lose

Goodreads Blurb: It was supposed to be a fun day, shopping at the mall with her best friend. Then the panic attack started and Kaylee Cavanaugh finds herself screaming, unable to stop. Her secret fears are exposed and it's the worst day of her life.
Until she wakes up in the psychiatric unit.
She tries to convince everyone she's fine--despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream which comes burbling up again and again. Everyone thinks she's crazy. Everyone except Lydia, that is. Another patient with some special abilities....
"An eBook exclusive prequel to Rachel Vincent's SOUL SCREAMERS series."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a second read for me, and I picked up on some things I didn't before. I still absolutely LOVE this series.
After having a screaming panic attack of epic proportions, Kaylee finds herself in the psychiatric ward of the hospital.  She's freaking out because she's been strapped to bed.  She doesn't understand why she is there, or when she'll go home.    She spends her time trying to convince her aunt & uncle that she isn't crazy and wants to go home.  Just as she's about to leave she has another "panic attack."  Lydia, the strange girl that's been staring at her, is the only one that can help.   After Lydia passes out, she gets put onto a stretcher.  You don't find out what happens to her, and Kaylee can't remember anything.
This is definitely a unique series to read.  I loved it from the minute I opened the book.  Well, downloaded it. :P

Soooo, if you haven't read the rest of the series you may not want to read past this.

Here are some things I'm beginning to wonder...
The girl in the room that was talking to herself.   I'm thinking she's the same person we see in If I Die??? Possibly.
After you read MSTT you understand why Uncle Brendon can be so convincing.
It never really says, but i'm pretty sure Lydia knew what Kaylee was the first time she saw her.

Book Review: Rival Demons

Amazon Blurb: After narrowly escaping death at the hand of the Order of Shadows, Harper finds herself thrust into the strange and beautiful world of the shadow demons. But crossing through the portal doesn't mean she is safe. The Order of Shadows is determined to bring her home and transfer the Prima line to the Harris family. They send their most vicious hunters after Harper. Hunters who will not stop until they have found their prey.

Determined to keep her safe, Jackson takes her deep into an underground world filled with dangers of its own. Here, Harper will begin a journey that will teach her more about herself and her own path than she ever imagined possible.

But will her relationship with Jackson survive?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I loved this novel, and cannot wait for the next installment.  Harper keeps her head high, and plows through like she’s always done.  There is a twist at the end, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.  As always, Sarra Cannon produces a great novel.  The writing flows great just as in the previous novels.  We meet a few new characters, and some of them you wonder where they stand as soon as you meet them.  The others, are warm and accepting.  There are a few moments when I wanted to knock the mess out of Jackson for behaving the way he does.  But a lot of things begin to unravel, and you start understanding why things have happened.  I’m trying not to say too much, so I don’t give any information away.  I do highly recommend this book, as well as the other books in this series.  It’s definitely unique in it’s story line.  I also love that it doesn’t include a love triangle.  It’s more or less a book about a girl trying to deal with her inner “demons.”

Book Review: Lenobia's Vow by P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast

Goodreads Blurb: The second in the enthralling new mini-series of novellas from the #1 bestselling authors of the House of Night, Lenobia's Vow tells the gripping story behind the House of Night's enigmatic riding instructor – and one of Zoey’s closest allies against evil
The House of Night is an international publishing sensation; with almost 12 million books in print, and an incredible 120 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, the series has taken the world by storm. Now, the excitement continues as the Cast mother-daughter duo shares the back stories of a few of the House of Night's most important – and mysterious – characters. The second of the House of Night Novellas brings us Lenobia, the strong, beautiful horseback riding instructor, who guides Zoey through some of her darkest hours, and has a dark secret buried in her own past...
In a small southern town at the turn of the century, young Lenobia is developing into a beautiful young woman with ideas of her own. But when she is Marked as a fledgling vampyre, her world turns upside down, and she is drawn to the musical streets of New Orleans. There, she learns of the city’s dark underbelly, ruled by powerful black magic. As Lenobia experiences her first love – and loss – and discovers a passion for horses to sustain her, she must come face-to-face with Darkness itself. And she may not escape without scars.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was AMAZING to see Lenobia’s strength at such a young age.  It’s also easy to see why Lenobia doesn’t fall into the darkness that Neferet brings to the House of Night.  Her love interest is a really sweet person, and overall explains why she has the feelings she does towards relationships with humans.  He is a Creole, and I swear every time he talked I heard the voice in my head as Renee Lanier from True Blood.  Yes I know lame, but the voice fit with his personality.  I definitely recommend this book to the fans of the House of Night series.  You won’t be disappointed, I promise!
